About
I have long explored and researched how to reinvent the beautiful four seasons of Korea with a contemporary sensibility. This challenge has been my most significant creative burden since my university days. My journey began with my choice of major: Oriental Painting. At the time, the curriculum focused strictly on traditional brushwork and theories, with subjects limited to a narrow range. Consequently, Oriental painting struggled to harmonize with modern urban architecture, often perceived as outdated and unfamiliar by people living in contemporary spaces.Deeply concerned by this reality, I aspired to create a new genre—a style that utilizes traditional ink and Hanji (Korean paper) but resonates with the modern era. Since my first solo exhibition in 1996, I have held 48 solo exhibitions over the past 27 years. Through these numerous shows, I have consistently questioned form and concept by interpreting, deconstructing, and reconstructing landscapes.Recently, my work has expanded beyond Korean scenery to encompass the nature of the United States, Europe, and Australia, all captured on Hanji. The Oriental brush I use is longer and finer than Western brushes. I focus on leveraging these unique characteristics to reinterpret global landscapes through my distinct perspective and technique. My primary interest now lies in establishing the "Chooni Park style"—a unique harmony of refined brushwork and intense coloration.Ultimately, the path my work seeks to follow is one that offers healing and solace to the viewer.
