The converse on of civilization and the art of Byoung-choon Park

● Byoung-choon Park injects meaning into his landscape paintings while not forsaking the act of drawing as the imitation of form (shape). It is the broad scope of contemporary art in which the art of materiality (representation) evolves into the art of expression. In his blurry and blacklandscapes, Park reveals both his mind and the outside world in a single object. What he tries to capture is his admiration of nature that he experiences with his entire being. His reverence for nature, which he attained by way of the journeys he made throughout his life, is imbedded within his landscape paintings. It pays homage to the force of nature emanating from trees, grass, mountains, and cliffs.

● Park regularly places colorful objects and figures over muck (Korean soot ink) paintings across a black landscape and a blurry landscape. This practice heralds a new sensational language, transgressing, yet still respecting the laws of classical Korean painting. He breaks free from the traditional ideological expectations of landscape scenery and meets with the natural landscape on its own terms. He reinterprets highly regarded classics and creates a new method of representation. By hanging landscape paintings on meat hooks as if in a butcher shop, or by introducing a realistic object into the plane of painting, he creates an encounter between the painting and installation, planarity and three dimensionality, between the painting and the realistic objects. His works come alive by way of his wit and humor.

● The most profound aspect of Park's paintings stems from the symbiotic relationship between a large field of view of his monumental landscapes (or, grand view landscapes) and the detailed representations within these landscapes. His unique brush strokes serve to construct an overall illusion within each painting, and at the same time also exist as individual thoughts imbued with ecstatic liveliness. That abstract language of endless repetition, connected with a conceptual language contributing to shapes, accentuates a blending of traditional and modern approaches toward representing nature. His paintings embrace both whole and parts, as well as universality and specificity.

● Byoung-choon Park brings the thousand-year-old tradition of the muck painting into our current Zeitgeist. His approach underscores the post-colonial conversion of Northeast Asian culture. He reconstructs the classical language of muck paintings with a contemporary state of social awareness. His approach is a response to the brutal wounds inflicted by modernity forced throughout colonial history. With both criticism and satire, Byoung-choon Park attempts to move past the complex of many post-colonial artists who were removed from tradition, and instead christened and brought up with implanted colonial culture. Byoung-choon Park's art is an experiment as well as a challenge to bring aspects of Asian culture beyond mere curiosity for exotic taste in this western-oriented era of globalization. ■ Jun-ki Kim

About artist Byoung-choon Park

● Artist Byoung-choon Park was born in a small rural village in the Chung-chong province of Korea, and grew up in an impoverished farming community helping his father maintain the family farm. After graduating vocational high school, he worked various factory jobs and continued farming with his father. In the meantime, he engaged in the process of soul searching by making long distance bicycle trips through the country and by experimenting with his artistic talents by selling some of his paintings at a commercial art district in Seoul. Eventually, his innate passion for fine art compelled him to enroll in Hong-ik University at a later age. This belated start motivated him and provided unwavering energy to develop his technical skills and artistic vision. Since then, he has been painting tirelessly and passionately for the past 28 years.

● "Traditional painting," his focus at Hong-ik University, was at the time considered an antiquated and regimented genre of art. Despite this, he envisioned the importance of reviving such a tradition in a time of accelerated globalization and market capitalism. He engaged in an intense study of Eastern philosophy, making an effort to combine tradition and modernity into his painting – these efforts made a profound impact on his creative vision. As a result, we often find in his work a combination of traditional themes focused on localized natural and cultural phenomena, yet often divorced from the regimented strictures of traditional Korean painting.

● While he carries out breakthrough experiments in his studio, he still makes regular treks outside the boundaries of urban civilization, sketching what he sees and feels in situ. He has created different landscape series based on his own pil-beop(How to use a brush), the style of brush strokes, which he developed through sketching natural phenomena. The series 'blurry landscape', for example, is a powerful and playful line of work, reviving the memory of the past and combining scenes of the myriad of day-to-day domestic activities and natural landscapes.

● His work is not limited to hanji (Korean paper) and muck (Korean soot-based ink). He engages the Eastern philosophy of non-possession by making chalk drawings on a huge blackboard over a period of days, only to erase these drawings when he feels the creative process has reached its endpoint. He also hangs his paintings on hooks, as would be slabs of meat hung in a butcher shop. He thus encourages his viewers to navigate through this maze of hung paintings so they might experience the paintings not only with their eyes, but also on their skin and ears. His intent in this is to portray traditional paintings as something raw and tangible, instead of something to be appreciated only from an aesthetic distance. Additionally, he has experimented with rubber, instant noodles, plastic bags, and blue duct tape so as to reveal natural landscapes from his unique perspective. The refreshing impact he brings to the field serves to pursue the expansion of expressive media and diversify formative experiments beyond the limitations of traditional art, yet also paying due respect to traditional artistic themes and techniques.

● Byoung-choon Park has created a genre of his own by experimenting with traditional Korean painting in his unique and consistent way without compromising to commerce or following fashionable trends in the field. As a critical mind and leading artist from Korea, he wishes to echo his identity at this worldwide stage in Venice. His work will, I expect, offer a new sense of freshness to the art lovers of the world. ■ Hyun-joo Choe

1. Sungkok Art Museum presents “Park Byung-choon: Asking the Way” as its final exhibition of 2013. This exhibition is part of the 'Spotlight on Mid-Career Artists' program, which Sungkok Art Museum has organized and run since 2009. It aims to support and encourage contemporary Korean artists of the mid-career generation by showcasing their work through museum exhibitions. While the primary goal is to widely publicize and introduce these artists, their work, and their artistic significance and potential to the audience, it is, in fact, an exhibition aimed at the artists themselves, for them to see. It seeks to provide artists with an opportunity to reflect on their past and present, which they have shared with their work, and to assess their current position as artists or their future vision for their work. ● Many artists do not get the chance to display their work in a panoramic retrospective during their lifetime. Most artists do not even get such an opportunity after they pass away. This is why we insist on organizing mid-career artist exhibitions as semi-retrospective solo shows. Indeed, we live in an era of abundance where everything overflows. Talented young artists are actively working across the domestic and international art scenes, seemingly dominating them with powerful production techniques and ingenious imagination. Now, more than ever, there is a need to focus more on relatively marginalized age groups of artists, genres, and forms, and to balance and maximize their inner strength and presence. Sungkok Art Museum believes that such a balanced role for the museum and its exhibition programs are valid and meaningful at this point in time.

2. As is well known, Korean painting, along with sculpture and printmaking, has been a so-called 'marginalized genre' in the Korean art scene over the past decade. This is evident when considering the number of physical exhibitions at museums and galleries, actual transactions in the art market, or the scale and proportion of works circulated at art fairs and in the market. There would be little difficulty in quantifying this imbalance. Of course, changes in art consumers' aesthetic tastes, the direct and indirect influence of international art trends, and the resulting bandwagon effect would account for a significant portion. However, the current Korean art scene, unilaterally driven by the market, and its standardized trendy forms, especially the excessive influx and supply of various hyperrealist styles, have caused the art world to suffer a major upheaval with market-loyal, high-sugar, secular works by young artists chasing money. ● It is no exaggeration to say that forms and genres that are difficult to encounter or see have newly emerged in the art world. Even within the genre of painting, which was at the center of trends, it was difficult to find diverse forms that guaranteed issue-specificity, or so-called species diversity of issues. It was rare to encounter works that developed neo-expressionist tendencies of the 80s to fit current issues, or works that critically supported their sensibility and philosophy, or relief-like paintings with thick textures where brush strokes were alive and wriggling, or figurative expressionist paintings where the artist's creative impulse was revealed with rough breathing. Abstract works were, of course, also rare. Paintings, which should have been rich and expansive, were generally dry and flat. It was like watching a competition of 'who can draw more meticulously and beautifully.' Painting sometimes took over the role of photography, unnecessarily wielding brushes. Photography aimed for painting, and painting sought to resemble photography. Painting, the eternal king of fantasy—the flower of art genres—chose an excessively stable complacency within its unique field of possibilities, a different dimension from that of video. ● In particular, over the past decade, it has been difficult to find works that actively reflected the ideological conflicts, confrontations, and clashes of contemporary society, such as interest in so-called East-West issues, or works directly targeting North-South issues like poverty and hunger. It was difficult to find paintings that actively brought forth and reflected real-world issues such as ontological concerns about one's life and future, chronic regional limitations, and furthermore, unemployment, marriage, education, adoption, multicultural society, terrorism, nuclear threats, the power struggles of the international community surrounding the Korean Peninsula, the distorted logic of power prioritizing national interests, and the problem of national division. Korean art merely appeared bright, cheerful, petit, and at first glance, dynamic. However, the various realities of the society from which the work originated, and the artist's own image, were not so bright. Over the past decade, the world outwardly seemed abundant. Yet, most people were spiritually and physically impoverished. Society was gradually falling ill. Most artists were also in this state. The art community was no exception. ● Those who observed this also grew tired one by one. The art community operated by holding onto a few popular artists and 'rotating' them according to the situation. Artists, as well as the market itself, began to feel a decline in commercial momentum. The market is the market. It was indeed sensitive. The loyalty of collectors who had strongly supported the market for the past decade rapidly declined. The fatigue of the public and artists also accumulated rapidly. They are now hastily seeking alternatives here and there. Attempts to strategically open up new directions also continued. Compared to these, artists were slower in their subjective recognition or awareness of such changes or shifts in trends. Even if they knew, they were in a situation where they kept a low profile and watched the market and the public. ● This is also why Sungkok Art Museum set its criteria for selecting target artists for the 'Spotlight on Mid-Career Artists' exhibition towards 'problematic artists' rather than 'topical artists.' The nature of the artist and their work strongly carries contemporaneity, regardless of the year of production. Sungkok's mid-career exhibition targets works and artistic spirits that remain valid, like songs that are sung for a long time across generations, or best-selling novels that continue to sell steadily. In other words, the artist's artistic philosophy, attitude, and spirit are prioritized above all else. Topical artists merely receive temporary, consumer-driven attention. We are confident that most problematic artists will remain in art history. Sungkok will focus more on these problematic artists.

3. “Park Byung-choon: Asking the Way” was planned to reflect on the dilemmas of the Korean art scene and contemporary Korean painting through the work of mid-career artist Park Byung-choon. Park Byung-choon has traversed the currents of the art world that speak of the death of Korean painting, beyond its stagnation, and has presented unique and active artistic creation experiments, almost unprecedented among existing Korean painters. He did not succumb to trends or the gaze of others, did not compromise with the world to avoid being ashamed of himself, and did not neglect self-investment and self-discipline for a healthy career. It was difficult, but he did not waver. He threw himself into his work, confronted the world, and ran forward relentlessly. This is why Park Byung-choon was selected and introduced as a mid-career artist. ● For Park Byung-choon, Korean society during his university years and immediately after graduation was chaos itself. The international community was not much different. The artist did not give up on his struggle with himself and his work, which had no answers at the time. He was poor and felt significant pressure as a head of household, but instead, with his characteristic optimistic thinking, he persistently fought against these challenges. Sometimes he even enjoyed it. He constantly asked himself ontological questions such as 'What is art, what is an artist, who am I, what am I, what can I be, what can I do?' Just as he breathed to live, he had to pedal harder, stronger, and rougher to avoid falling. He also endured the difficult 1990s, which felt like a long tunnel, with just a brush, enjoying the aesthetic 고민 of 'what to paint' and his endless struggle with himself and the world. In an era when installations were rampant, he held onto a flimsy brush and built his own solid psychological structure that would not waver. ● Like most artists, Park Byung-choon needed a killer move to survive in the art field. When his work didn't flow, when he regretted choosing the path of an artist, when life felt complicated, when his mind became cluttered, Park Byung-choon would take his sketchbook and leave. He habitually sought out mountains. 'Is what I saw with my eyes truly a landscape? What is sansu? What is painting?' He sought comfort by relying on nature, as if making a confession. He embraced the snow and rain with his body and soul, slid through them, and, by encountering their inherently different nature, humbled himself and sought answers. How many times did he repeat this? Park Byung-choon gave up on trying to find answers or solutions. There, he found other topics that he had not felt in the secular world. Instead of giving answers, it threw a pile of problems at him. He embraced a heap of homework instead of answers. He became determined. He took out his brush and willingly recorded the new homework given by nature. He drew quickly. He drew the homework. He quickly drew nature's questions with only the ink he brought, lest he miss them. At that time, for Park Byung-choon, the sketchbook was, in his words, 'life' itself. And not just then, but then, now, and in the future, it will be a proud and valid 'life.' ● Park Byung-choon's killer move, which opened up the 2000s and dominated the art scene, and which we are all familiar with, thus permeated his body through the brush. What is important is that even after this, Park Byung-choon did not abandon the mountain, the teacher who had passed on his killer move to him. His interest in and gratitude towards the mountain continued through series such as "Landscape," "Sansu," and "Travel," returning the favor of the teacher, the mountain, and the earth in various ways, forms, and expressions. It was a form of 'ink-based gratitude.' A series of exhibitions and works titled "Landscape of Memory" (2001), "Cloudy Landscape" (2003), "Black Landscape" (2004), "Flowing Landscape" (2006), "Collected Sansu" (2007), "Landscape" (2010), "Travel" (2011), and "Unfamiliar Landscape" (2013) are examples of this, and Park Byung-choon's creative impulse reached its peak during these exhibitions. ● Park Byung-choon, who habitually said, 'Creation is a new idea,' continued his mature thoughts and skilled movements, moving beyond walls and two-dimensional surfaces to three-dimensional and installation works in the field, somewhat aggressively. This change in working space and form, as well as sculptural and aesthetic development, positioned Park Byung-choon as a late-blooming installation artist. His vigorous three-dimensional experiments, which continued with Ramen Sansu, Rubber Sansu, Chalkboard Sansu, and Bag Sansu, all emerged from his two-dimensional sansu landscape works, suggesting the increased inner strength of Park Byung-choon from his two-dimensional work at the time. This is 'Park Byung-choon style Sansu Landscape,' 'Byung-choon Jun (峻)' is a selfless Jun that naturally arises from the body and mind in the process of returning what was received from the sansu landscape of nature back to the sansu landscape of the world.

4. This exhibition, “Park Byung-choon: Asking the Way” at Sungkok Art Museum, introduces 66 carefully selected works created by the artist, who has now reached middle age, from 1988 to the present. It was not easy. However, much thought was given. While I have not often felt that the museum space was small, I did wish for a little more room. This indicates that Park Byung-choon's ambition and efforts over the past 23 years were by no means insignificant. Not only is the sheer volume of his work—the number of pieces consistently produced during difficult times, undeterred by an environment that did not fully recognize him, the size of his supports, sketchbooks, and drawings—astonishing, but his unique artistic achievements over the past 23 years, having thoroughly mastered and fused Eastern and Western painting techniques, pigments, and methods, will once again confirm that his current reputation is well-deserved.
