요세미티의 불탄 숲을 표현한 박병춘의 대형 작품 'Black Landscape-Yosemite'
오는 23일 LA 컨벤션 센터에서 개막하는 'LA 아트쇼'(LA Art Show)가 지난해에 이어 올해도 한인 작가들을 주목하고 있어 화제다.
LA 아트쇼의 프로듀서 킴 마틴 데일은 몇 년 동안 한국의 단색화에 매료되어, LA 단색화를 주요 작품으로 선보여 왔으며 올해 역시 독특한 작품성을 자랑하는 한인 작가들에게 관심을 기울인다.
특별히 LA 아트쇼가 올해 주목하는 작가는 LA의 백 아트 갤러리(대표 수잔 백)에서 선보이는 박병춘(Chuni Park) 작가.
한국에서 동양화를 전공한 후 전통적인 화선지와 수묵화법에 아크릴과 오일 페인팅 등을 이용해 독특한 화법으로 섬과 숲 등의 자연을 대형 화폭에 그려 넣어 온 그는 한 국 화단에서는 이미 독창적 화법을 구사하는 것으로 유명한 작가.
이번 LA 아트쇼는 지난해부터 미국과 캘리포니아와 오리건 등 서부를 여행하며 느낀 자연에 대한 영감을 화폭에 올린 대작이 선보인다.
LA 아트쇼는 그의 작품성을 인정, 박병춘 작가에게 특별 전시관을 주고 요세미티와 레드우드 등 미 서부를 여행하며 그린 그의 대형 수묵 그림을 전시토록 배려했다. 이번 LA 페어 부스에서 박 작가가 선보이는 작품은 100피트가 넘는 대작(Black Painting with Road installation).
LA 아트 페어에 작품을 선보이기 위해 지난해 가을 박병춘 작가가 특별히 미국으로 초청한 수잔 백은 박 작가에게 LA에서의 레지던시 창작 프로그램을 후원했으며 이번 미국 자연 탐사를 통한 작품 제작을 도왔다.
박병춘 작가의 작품에 대한 LA 아트 페어 측 반응은 매우 좋다. '단색화를 대한 후 숲박히는 절제와 단정함 앞에서 놀랐듯 이번 작품에도 어떠한 표현을 할 수 없을 정도로 자연의 정기가 느껴져 놀라웠다'라고 극찬했다.
LA 아트쇼에서 주목하는 또 다른 한인 작가는 도자기에 서양 화법으로 작품을 그려 넣는 조상연 씨의 작품.

LA의 KARO 갤러리(대표 라 이언 조) 작가로 작품을 선보이는 조상연 씨의 작품은 한국식으로 구워진 여러 개의 정사각형 도자기에 다양한 오브제를 그려 넣어 하나의 큰 다른 작품으로 재탄생 시키는 아트. 하나하나가 개별적인 작품으로의 스토리를 갖고 있으면서 여러 개가 연합으로 모아진 주제로 엮이는 독특한 구조다.
그는 지난해에도 같은 형태의 작품을 선보여 전시작이 모두 판매되는 등 호응을 받았다.
조상연 작가는 작품 속에 '동양과 서양을 아우르는 융합을 도모한다'며 이번 아트 페어에서 선보이는 작품 속에도 전통과 현대 등 시간을 뛰어넘는 것 외에 입체와 평면을 넘어서는 통합의 예술을 선보이고 싶다"고 밝혔다.
LA 아트 페어는 뉴욕의 SM 갤러리(대표 사이먼 권)가 선보이는 마리킴 작가의 작품에도 주목한다. 그는 눈이 엄청나게 큰 인물화로 주목받는 있는 아티스트. LA 아트쇼는 "마치 만화 속 인물처럼 어떤 특정한 부류의 인종인지 알 수 없지만 이 형상은 미래의 주역을 표현한 듯 하다"고 그의 작품에 주목하는 이유를 밝혔다.
한국에서 팝 아티스트로 불리는 마리킴은 현재 그림 외에도 엔터테이너들과의 협업을 통한 다양한 프로젝트를 진행하고 있는 아티스트.
LA 아트쇼의 킴 마틴데일 프로듀서는 "한인화가들의 작품에 서는 동서양의 독특한 이미지를 넘어서는 역동성과 창의력이 매우 강렬하게 느껴진다"며 이런 매력이 LA 아트쇼가 한인 화가들에게 주목하는 이유라며 많은 한인 갤러리의 한인 작가 작품 모두에 큰 관심을 갖고 있다"고 강조한다.
올해 LA 아트쇼에는 한국에서도 많은 갤러리가 참여한다.
LA 아트쇼는 23일 리셉션 파티가 곁들인 개막일 개장시간은 24~26일까지 오전 11시부터 오후 7시, 27일 오전 11시부터 오후 5시까지 오픈한다. 입장료 30달러. 23일 오프닝 나잇 프리미어 파티가 곁들인 개막일 입장료는 125달러, 200달러, 250달러.

LA Convention Center Opens on the 23rd
Chuni Park's large-scale work 'Black Landscape-Yosemite,' depicting the burnt forests of Yosemite
The 'LA Art Show,' opening on the 23rd at the LA Convention Center, is drawing attention this year, as it did last year, for its focus on Korean artists.
Kim Martindale, producer of the LA Art Show, has been fascinated by Korean Dansaekhwa (monochrome painting) for several years. He has showcased LA Dansaekhwa as a major theme and continues to highlight Korean artists with unique artistic qualities this year.
Notably, the LA Art Show this year features artist Chuni Park, represented by Baek Art Gallery (Director Susan Baek) in LA.
Having majored in Oriental painting in Korea, Chuni Park is known for his unique technique of depicting nature, such as islands and forests, on large canvases using traditional Korean paper and ink wash painting methods combined with acrylic and oil paints. He is already renowned in the Korean art scene for his distinctive style.
This LA Art Show will feature a masterpiece inspired by the nature he experienced while traveling through the American West, including California and Oregon, since last year.
Recognizing his artistic merit, the LA Art Show has provided Chuni Park with a special exhibition space to display his large-scale ink paintings inspired by his travels through the American West, including Yosemite and Redwood. The work presented by Park at this LA fair booth is a monumental piece over 100 feet long (Black Painting with Road installation).
To showcase his work at the LA Art Fair, Susan Baek specially invited Chuni Park to the U.S. last fall, sponsoring his residency program in LA and assisting with the creation of works through his exploration of American nature.
The LA Art Fair's response to Chuni Park's work has been very positive. They praised it, saying, 'Just as we were surprised by the restrained elegance of Dansaekhwa, we were astonished by the natural energy emanating from this work, to the point where words fail to describe it.'
Another Korean artist highlighted at the LA Art Show is Cho Sang-yeon, known for her works that apply Western painting techniques to ceramics.

Cho Sang-yeon, represented by KARO Gallery (Director Ryan Cho) in LA, creates art by drawing various objects on multiple square ceramic pieces, fired in the Korean style, to form a larger, unified artwork. Each individual piece has its own story, and together they weave into a unique structure with a collective theme.
Last year, she exhibited similar works, which were all sold out, receiving a positive response.
Cho Sang-yeon stated that her works aim to 'integrate East and West.' For this art fair, she wants to present an art that transcends time, encompassing tradition and modernity, as well as integrating three-dimensionality and two-dimensionality.
The LA Art Fair also highlights the works of Mari Kim, presented by SM Gallery (Director Simon Kwon) in New York. She is an artist known for her large-eyed character paintings. The LA Art Show explained its interest in her work, stating, "Her figures, like characters from a comic book, don't seem to belong to any specific race, but rather appear to represent the protagonists of the future."
Known as a pop artist in Korea, Mari Kim is currently involved in various projects, including collaborations with entertainers, in addition to her painting.
Kim Martindale, producer of the LA Art Show, emphasized that "the works of Korean artists exhibit a powerful dynamism and creativity that transcends unique East-West imagery." He added that this appeal is why the LA Art Show focuses on Korean artists, and that many Korean galleries are showing great interest in the works of Korean artists.
This year, many galleries from Korea are participating in the LA Art Show.
The LA Art Show opens with a reception party on the 23rd. Opening hours are from 11 AM to 7 PM on the 24th-26th, and from 11 AM to 5 PM on the 27th. Admission is $30. For the opening night premiere party on the 23rd, admission is $125, $200, or $250.
