Capturing the Essence of Eastern Ink Wash Painting

한·중·일 8개 갤러리 참가해 전통-현대 다양한 작품 선봬

2019년 LA아트쇼가 오는 23일부터 닷새간의 일정으로 LA컨벤션센터에서 개막한다. 행사는 20만sf 전시장에 18개국에서 온 120여 개 갤러리가 참여, 다양한 작품을 선보일 예정이며 7만여 명의 미술 수집가들과 관람객들이 찾을 것으로 기대된다. 특히 이번 LA아트쇼에는 특별 기획전을 통해 동양의 수묵화가 대거 선보일 것으로 보여 주목된다. 한국·중국·일본의 8개 갤러리가 전통, 현대, 아방가르드를 아우르는 다채로운 수묵화 작품을 소개할 예정이다.

LA아트쇼는 다양하면서도 포괄적인 범아시아 작품을 선보일 예정이다. 아트 쇼 측은 “아시아 외의 지역에서 이 정도 스케일의 쇼를 보는 것은 드문 일”이라며 “한국과 중국, 일본 작가들의 수묵화를 통해 동아시아에서 전통적인 붓글씨 페인팅이 어떻게 현대 작품으로 발전해 왔는지를 확인해 볼 수 있을 것”이라고 밝혔다. 이번 특별기획전(Pan-Asian Ink Painting)에는 한·중·일 8개 갤러리가 참여하기 때문에 각 나라의 작품을 비교해 볼 수 있는 자리이기도 하다.

 

LA아트쇼의 프로듀서 킴 마튼데일은 “동양의 수묵화 스타일은 미술사에서 중요한 흐름 중 하나지만 서구에서는 이에 대한 지식이 전무하다. 우리는 먹에 대한 더 많은 이해가 필요하다”며 “환태평양에 위치하고 있는 LA는 지역적으로 이를 소개하는 이상적인 위치에 있다고 본다. 아시아 밖에서 열리는 유일무이한 쇼케이스가 될 것”이라고 말했다.

한국 작가로는 백아트(대표 수잔 백)가 한국화가 추니 박(한국명 박병춘)의 작품을 들고 나온다. 박 작가는 가봤던 장소의 기억을 추상적인 페인팅으로 재현하고 자신만의 독특한 필법으로 풍경을 화폭에 담아내는 것이 특징이다. ‘검은 풍경’ ‘흐린 산수’, ‘낯선, 어떤 풍경’ 등 끊임없이 실험적인 산수풍경 시리즈를 발표해왔다. 이번 전시에는 멀티 패널을 이용한 대형 작품을 소개한다. 또 처음으로 미국의 자연에서 영감을 얻는 작품도 선보일 예정이다. 그는 지난해 백아트의 지원으로 18th 스트리트 레지던시에 머무는 동안 미서부 지역을 여행하며 LA아트쇼를 준비했다.

박 작가는 홍대에서 동양화를 공부했으며 2009년 중앙일보 평론가 50인이 뽑은 30·40작가 10인과 2007년 동아일보 올해의 예술가 한국화부문 1위에 선정된 바 있다.

중국에서는 4개의 갤러리가 참여해 수묵화를 선보인다. 미술품 딜러 마이클 구에듀이스(Michael Goedhuis)는 세계 화단에서 주목하는 중국 최고의 현대 화가 구웬다(Gu Wenda)를 비롯해 리 수바이, 보 링 등 10인의 작품을 전시해 중국의 문명의 깊은 이해를 통해 중국 현대 미술이 어떻게 변모되어 왔는지를 보여줄 예정이다. 이외에도 베이징의 ‘이스트 아트 센터’, LA의 ‘CM2 스페이스’, ‘코스페어’ 등이 중국 수묵화를 들고 나온다.

일본 갤러리는 ‘카미야’ ‘키타이’ ‘슈모쿠’가 참여한다. 카미야는 일본 전위 서예의 거장 우이치 이노우에의 후기작품을 전시할 예정이다.

2019 LA Art Show Opens on the 23rd

8 Galleries from Korea, China, and Japan Showcase Diverse Works from Traditional to Contemporary

The 2019 LA Art Show will open on the 23rd for a five-day run at the LA Convention Center. The event, held in a 200,000 sq ft exhibition space, will feature over 120 galleries from 18 countries presenting a wide range of artworks, and is expected to attract over 70,000 art collectors and visitors. This year's LA Art Show is drawing particular attention for its extensive showcase of Eastern ink wash painting through a special exhibition. Eight galleries from Korea, China, and Japan will introduce a diverse collection of ink wash paintings that span traditional, modern, and avant-garde styles.

The LA Art Show is set to feature a diverse and inclusive selection of Pan-Asian art. An official from the art show stated, "It is rare to see a show of this scale outside of Asia," and added, "Through the ink wash paintings of Korean, Chinese, and Japanese artists, we will be able to see how traditional East Asian brush painting has evolved into contemporary art." This special exhibition, 'Pan-Asian Ink Painting,' will feature eight galleries from Korea, China, and Japan, providing an opportunity to compare the works of each country.

Kim Martindale, the producer of the LA Art Show, commented, "The Eastern ink wash style is a significant movement in art history, yet there is a lack of knowledge about it in the West. We need a greater understanding of 'meok' (ink)." He continued, "Located on the Pacific Rim, LA is an ideal place to introduce this art form. It will be a unique showcase, the only one of its kind outside of Asia."

From Korea, Baik Art (represented by Susan Baik) will present the works of Korean artist Chooni Park (Korean name: Park Byung-choon). Park is known for reinterpreting memories of places he has visited into abstract paintings, capturing landscapes on canvas with his unique brushwork. He has continuously released experimental landscape series such as 'Black Scenery,' 'Faint Sansu,' and 'Unfamiliar, A Certain Scenery.' For this exhibition, he will introduce large-scale works using multi-panels. He also plans to unveil new pieces inspired by American nature for the first time. He prepared for the LA Art Show while traveling through the American West during his residency at the 18th Street Arts Center last year, supported by Baik Art.

Park studied Oriental Painting at Hongik University and was selected as one of the top 10 artists in their 30s and 40s by 50 JoongAng Ilbo critics in 2009, and ranked first in the Korean painting category for Dong-A Ilbo's 'Artist of the Year' in 2007.

From China, four galleries will present ink wash paintings. Art dealer Michael Goedhuis will showcase works by 10 artists, including Gu Wenda, one of China's most prominent contemporary artists, as well as Li Subai and Bo Ling. The exhibition aims to show how modern Chinese art has evolved through a deep understanding of Chinese civilization. Additionally, Beijing's East Art Center, LA's CM2 Space, and Co-Space will also feature Chinese ink wash paintings.

Japanese galleries Kamiya, Kitai, and Shumoku will participate. Kamiya will exhibit later works by Yuichi Inoue, a master of Japanese avant-garde calligraphy.
