Korean Painter Chuni Park, U.S. Debut at LA Art Show with Support from Baik Art. Also Exhibiting a 100-foot-long Work.

By Oh Soo-yeon

A piece from artist Chuni Park's 'Unfamiliar, a certain landscape' series, which will debut in the U.S. at the LA Art Show next January.

His works make you linger. At first glance, they appear to be grand ink-and-wash landscapes, but a closer look reveals a refreshing novelty in the unique brushstrokes. Look even closer, and you might tilt your head at an out-of-place object like a bus or a sofa tucked into a corner. And it doesn't stop there. Like a hidden picture puzzle, his paintings contain people and stories, making it difficult to walk away.

This captivating Korean art is coming to Los Angeles. From January 23rd to 27th of next year, the works of Chuni Park (Korean name Park Byung-chun) will be featured at the LA Art Show held at the LA Convention Center. After three years of preparation for his U.S. entry, Park stated that the LA Art Show will be his American debut.

Chuni Park is known as a maverick in the world of Korean painting due to his free-spirited approach, unbound by conventional subjects or materials. While his base is traditional ink, he incorporates various materials like acrylics, pastels, charcoal, and conté. He is known for capturing landscapes with his distinctive brushwork, continuously releasing experimental series such as 'Black Scenery,' 'Misty Landscape,' and 'Unfamiliar, a certain landscape.' He studied Korean painting at Hongik University and was selected as one of the top 10 artists in their 30s and 40s by 50 JoongAng Ilbo critics in 2009, and named Artist of the Year in Korean Painting by the Dong-A Ilbo in 2007.

Baik Art gallery, led by Susan Baik, is strongly supporting Park's U.S. debut. The gallery facilitated Park's work in the U.S. for two months last September and October through the artist residency program at the 18th Street Arts Center. "Park's work is interesting at first sight, but the more you look, the more new things you see. The trees, the soil, the sky—they all take on a new feeling. It has a unique charm. The large-scale works are especially magnificent," said Baik. "We plan to introduce a 100-foot-long large-scale piece by Park at next year's LA Art Show."

Last fall, we met with Park during his residency at the 18th Street Arts Center as he prepared for the LA Art Show to discuss his work.

How was your time in the U.S.? "I started by traveling to places like the Grand Canyon and Sedona to sketch American nature. To be honest, I cursed while trying to sketch the Grand Canyon. It just wasn't working. It felt ridiculous trying to capture that vast nature in such a small space. But that sparked a challenge in me. I thought, 'Alright, let's give this a real try,' and kept sketching. I'm curious myself to see what kind of paintings will come out of it. In any case, if I paint the landscapes of the Grand Canyon and Sedona using my techniques, Americans will have a visual experience they've never had before."

What do you mean by a visual experience they've never had before? "When I went to Sedona, the bulging red mountains were incredible. But when I looked at Western paintings of Sedona, they all just depicted the peaks, not the ridges. It felt like the 'wow' moment of seeing it in person wasn't reflected in the art. For the mountain to truly stand out, you need the plains. You need to use the expansive lines of the trees to create a sense of ascent and depth. This is a chance to experience the visual difference between Western and Eastern painting."

What is that visual difference between Eastern and Western painting? "Western landscape painting often adopts a photographic perspective. My landscapes are not something you can capture with a camera. In a photo, subjects can't align in a straight line because of perspective. But in Eastern painting, there's a perspective of observing while moving. It's similar to a panorama."

Will you also be showing works with American backdrops at the LA Art Show? "On my second day in the U.S., I painted while thinking of the cliffs in Yeongwol, Gangwon Province. The landscape is from Yeongwol, but the people in it are ones I saw on Santa Monica Beach. The title is 'Memory of Santa Monica.' Ultimately, what's important is where I get my ideas and motivation, not which specific place I painted."

Your paintings feature objects in color. "They are narrative codes. They are meant to draw the viewer's eye and make them wonder, 'Why is that there?' It's intentional. At some point, I started painting buses in landscapes around the world. The bus in my paintings travels the globe. The 'Delighter' (paraglider) represents the human desire to fly, and the 'Sofa' embodies rest and meditation. That's why the series is titled 'Unfamiliar, a certain landscape.'"

Is there anything you'd like the Korean-American audience to look for at the LA Art Show? "Meeting Koreans here, I realized many are not familiar with the evolution of Korean art and culture. They often think of the typical landscape paintings they see hanging in restaurants. They probably haven't had many opportunities to see the changes in contemporary Korean art. So, this time, I want to properly show how Korean painting has evolved and incorporated contemporary art."
