"한국화를 세계에 알리기 위해 노력하는 화가, 추니박입니다." 한국화의 세계화를 모토로 삼고 있는 추니박 작가는 본명 '박병춘' 대신 외국인들도 쉽게 기억하고 부를 수 있는 '추니박'이라는 이름으로 전 세계를 무대로 활동하고 있습니다.

베니스에서 LA까지, 세계가 주목한 한국화 2015년 베니스 비엔날레 기간에 열린 전시에서 그는 방 6개와 홀을 포함한 약 200평 규모의 공간을 홀로 채우며 세계 미술계의 이목을 끌었습니다. 허공에 그림을 매다는 파격적인 '푸줏간' 형태의 설치와 관람객이 동양화 속으로 걸어 들어가는 듯한 압도적인 공간 연출은 현지에서 큰 찬사를 받았습니다.

자연에서 치유를 찾고, '진경'을 그리다 젊은 시절 부조리와 환경 문제 등 무거운 인간의 내면에 집중했던 그는, 스스로를 치유하기 위해 자연으로 향하면서 풍경화의 세계에 빠져들었습니다. 추니박 작가 작업의 핵심은 현장에서 직접 붓을 들고 자연을 마주하는 '사생'에 있습니다. 그는 대상을 단순히 똑같이 모사하는 것이 아니라, 남들이 보지 못하는 풍경의 진실한 모습인 '진경'을 찾아내 화폭에 옮깁니다.

30여 년간 치열하게 갈고닦은 기법을 통해 그는 이제 거대한 소나무 전체를 세밀하게 묘사하는 것부터, 압축된 하나의 점으로 표현하는 것까지 폭넓은 스펙트럼을 자유자재로 구사합니다.

대중에게 전하는 위로, "예술은 삶의 링거와 같다" 작가는 예술이 결코 특별하고 거창한 것이 아니라, 우리 삶의 공기이자 피로를 풀어주는 '링거(링겔)'와 같아야 한다고 말합니다. 관객들이 그의 그림을 통해 긴장을 풀고 마음의 치유를 얻기를 바라는 마음으로 작업에 임합니다. 스스로를 '자연과 관객을 연결해 주는 풍경화가'로 정의하는 그는, 자신도 감동할 수 있는 그림을 그리기 위해 오늘도 묵묵히 붓을 듭니다.

Chuni Park: A Korean Painter Bridging East and West, Figuration and Abstraction

"I am Chuni Park, a painter dedicated to introducing Korean painting to the world." With the globalization of Korean painting as his motto, Chuni Park actively works on the global stage, using the name 'Chuni Park'—which is easier for international audiences to remember and pronounce—instead of his birth name, Park Byung-chun.

From Venice to LA: Korean Painting Captures Global Attention During the 2015 Venice Biennale, Chuni Park garnered significant attention from the international art world by single-handedly filling a vast space of approximately 200 pyeong (about 660 square meters), including six rooms and a hall. His unconventional 'butcher shop' style installation, where paintings were suspended in mid-air, and the overwhelming spatial arrangement that made viewers feel as if they were walking into an East Asian painting, received widespread acclaim.

This exhibition marked his entry into the American art scene. For a month, the artist traveled through the vast natural landscapes of Yosemite and the Grand Canyon, capturing Western scenery with the colors and techniques of Korean painting. Notably, at the 2019 LA Art Show, he presented a monumental work connecting Yosemite, Korea's Chiaksan Mountain, and the Redwood forests. He interpreted the 'darkness (black)' in East Asian painting not merely as empty space, but as a cosmic concept where time and space converge, deeply moving the audience.

Finding Healing in Nature, Painting 'True Scenery' In his youth, Chuni Park focused on the heavy inner aspects of humanity, such as absurdity and environmental issues. However, to heal himself, he turned to nature and became immersed in landscape painting. The core of Chuni Park's work lies in 'plein air painting,' where he directly confronts nature with a brush in hand. He does not simply replicate subjects; instead, he seeks out and captures 'true scenery'—the authentic essence of a landscape that others might not perceive.

Through three decades of rigorous practice and refinement, he now freely employs a wide spectrum of techniques, from meticulously depicting an entire large pine tree to expressing it as a single, condensed dot.

Comfort for the Public: "Art is like an IV drip for life" The artist believes that art is not something special or grand, but rather like the air we breathe or an 'IV drip' that relieves the fatigue of life. He approaches his work with the hope that viewers will relax and find emotional healing through his paintings. Defining himself as a 'landscape painter who connects nature and the audience,' he continues to quietly pick up his brush each day, striving to create paintings that move even himself.

Chuni Park, who says he still needs contemplation and travel for his art even as he approaches his sixties, continues his artistic journey, pioneering a new world within East Asian painting with a touch that resonates with people of all nationalities worldwide. His journey will undoubtedly continue.
