생명의 위대함과 자화상으로서의 민들레 민들레를 그리는 행위는 나의 눈과 손, 그리고 마음이 타성이나 고착화된 관념에 빠지지 않도록 경계하는 나만의 중요한 예술적 장치다. 나는 이른 봄, 아직 온기가 돌지 않은 얼어붙은 땅을 뚫고 끝내 고개를 내미는 민들레를 보며 생명이란 얼마나 위대하고 끈질긴 것인가를 새삼스레 깨닫게 된다.
민들레는 척박한 자갈밭이나 황무지, 메마른 모래밭 등 그 어떤 거친 환경에서도 기어이 꽃을 피워내고, 인간의 발길에 밟힐지언정 죽지 않고 금세 새로운 싹을 틔워내는 강인한 식물이다. 나는 그 질긴 생명력에서 문득 나의 지나온 삶을 반추하며 깊은 숙연함을 느끼곤 한다.
조형적인 관점에서도 민들레는 대단히 아름다운 오브제다. 규칙적이면서도 결코 지루하지 않은 잎사귀의 배열은 민들레가 품은 생동감 넘치는 에너지를 상징하며, 마치 잘 빚어진 조각품과 같은 조형미를 선여한다. 돋아난 잎의 수만큼 정직하게 꽃대를 세우고 꽃을 피워내는 생태적 특성은, 이 작은 식물이 어째서 그토록 강인한 생명력을 지 가질 수밖에 없는지를 단적으로 증명한다. 또한, 주변 환경과 날씨에 따라 수백 가지가 넘는 각기 다른 크기와 모양을 띠기 때문에, 화가에게는 회화적 변주를 실험하기에 더없이 훌륭한 소재가 된다.
정원에서 길어 올린 통찰의 회화 이른 봄, 혹독한 추위를 뚫고 돋아난 민들레가 나의 정원에 지천으로 깔리기 시작하면, 나는 그것들을 깊이 관찰하고 연구하며 예술가로서의 통찰력을 키워나간다. 싹을 틔우고, 꽃을 피우고, 마침내 바람을 타고 홀연히 씨앗을 날려 보내는 전 과정을 묵묵히 지켜보는 일. 그것은 곧 시간의 흐름 속에 존재하는 나 자신의 삶을 투영하여 화면 위에 거대한 자화상을 그려나가는 작업과 같다.
꿈틀거리며 날것의 생명력을 뿜어내는 초록빛 민들레, 꿈결처럼 아스라한 분홍빛 민들레 밭, 그리고 단단한 벽돌 틈새를 당당히 뚫고 자라난 민들레 작품들. 이 모든 화폭은 내가 통과해 온 지난 시간의 거울이자 나의 정직한 자화상이며, 동시에 내가 가꾸는 살아있는 정원의 가장 진실된 얼굴이다./추니박

The Greatness of Life and the Dandelion as a Self-Portrait The act of painting dandelions serves as a crucial artistic anchor for me, ensuring that my eyes, hands, and mind do not lapse into complacency or rigid habits. Witnessing the dandelion break through the frozen earth of early spring to unfurl its blossoms forces me to realize anew just how magnificent and relentlessly resilient life truly is.
The dandelion is an inherently powerful plant; it coaxes blossoms out of the harshest terrains—be it a gravelly field, a barren wasteland, or a dry stretch of sand—and refuses to perish even when trampled underfoot, quickly sending up new shoots to bloom once more. Reflecting upon its tenacious vitality, I often find myself struck by a quiet reverence, as if looking into a mirror that charts the course of my own life.
From a formal and structural perspective, the dandelion is an extraordinarily beautiful organism. The arrangement of its leaves—rhythmic and orderly, yet never monotonous—symbolizes the vibrant, pulsating energy of the plant, showcasing a sculptural aesthetic. Its defining trait of raising a distinct flower stalk for every single leaf it produces is a poignant testament to the source of its unyielding strength. Furthermore, because its form shifts fluidly according to the environment and weather, manifesting in hundreds of different sizes and shapes, it stands as an exceptional subject matter for a painter to explore.
An Art of Insight Drawn from the Garden In the dawn of spring, when the dandelions that weathered the biting cold begin to blanket my garden in abundance, I observe and study them meticulously, nurturing my own creative insight. Silently watching the entire cycle—from the initial sprouting, to the full bloom, and finally to the release of seeds drifting into the wind—is akin to projecting my own existence onto the paper, painting a continuous self-portrait.
The green dandelions writhing with a raw pulse of life, the dreamlike fields of pink dandelions, and the works depicting dandelions forcefully rupturing solid bricks—all of these canvases are the living archives of my past, my intimate self-portraits, and the most authentic faces of a living garden./Chuni Park
